Carolyn Shimabukuro, Director of Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction Services
My Christian faith experience has been significantly shaped by the ministry of spiritual direction. I have found it to be a relationship of grace. In the sacred space of quiet and openness to God, I have the freedom to “be.” It is safe to wonder, express, and seek understanding of self, God, and others.
I have been met by God at a deep and authentic level. Through quiet contemplation I am tending to my soul from which I find myself experiencing greater depth, and responsiveness in my relationship with God. Because of the depth of what I have experienced, I desire that many others might enter into this grace in their relationship with God. I welcome anyone who may desire increased awareness and intimacy with God to enter a spiritual direction relationship as I serve as a listening companion on your journey.

For counseling:
I hold a passion for working with survivors of sexual abuse and various trauma: including childhood and family trauma, an abusive relationship, low self-esteem, and religious trauma. My theoretical orientation integrates several different perspectives into a holistic approach. That includes ideas in relational psychotherapy, attachment theory, and our bodily senses. I offer counseling services for individuals and couples. I am also an LGBTQIA2-S friendly therapist.
For Spiritual Direction:
Have you been feeling alone, not heard or not seen? Some might call it spiritual trauma, and it is a real thing. It may be very painful and there may be a lot to grieve and vent!
I hear you, and I want to be here for you. God is the one who does the healing and I’ll provide you a safe space for it.

Relationship Improvement and reconstruction
Bringing hope and renewal to the weary and broken-hearted
Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroad in life where a clear direction is not evident. In these moments we often need someone to come alongside and walk with us on our journey. As a Narrative Therapist, I will listen to your story without judgment. I will walk with you through a life transition that may include feelings of worry, stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and grief. I will help you use your faith as a resource to move you toward a sense of peace.
Therapeutic Philosophy
Jesus listened to people’s stories, and He spoke in stories. As a Narrative therapist, I believe that each of us has a unique story. Our
stories often reflect what we have come to believe about ourselves because of our experience with our family of origin and the world at large. Often these beliefs keep us in bondage and prevent us from experiencing the life that God intends for us. I believe that the
problems we struggle with, are external to us, and not who we are, and therefore can be overcome. I help my clients overcome their
challenges by focusing on their strengths and helping them write new stories to live their lives out of.

It can be stressful and lonely to walk through life on your own. You may be battling fears, doubts, and frustrations on a regular basis.
I desire to work with you to help you live to a fuller potential - emotionally, spiritually, or relationally. I believe each and every human being has been designed by God, created in His image, to live lives that have hope and peace within it. I will help you identify the fears or unhealthy parts of yourself that have been showing up in your journey and hindering your progress. I will walk alongside you as you take the steps to make the changes that you’ve desired to see in your life.
Our sessions will have a Christ-centered perspective woven throughout, as my work is inspired and informed by God and His Biblical truths. I believe through this counseling process, you will feel more seen and known. I create a safe, warm and therapeutic space, designed for vulnerability and connection.
I work with adult individuals (18+), and customize my sessions according to the unique needs of each individual client. My theoretical orientation utilizes blends of Psychodynamic work, Attachment-Based Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Lifespan Integration techniques, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based techniques, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy.

Linh Ngoc Truong, Family Therapist Intern

A calling to the profession of counseling led me away from my former career in market intelligence. My family and mentors inspired me to live out compassion and kindness. I experienced the healing power of their presence when feeling hurt and hopeless. I am now committed to bless others in the same way.
I am passionate about helping individuals, couples and families overcome issues such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, developmental and behavioral issues. I am familiar with struggles facing multi-ethnic, immigrant, post-divorce, blended or foster families. My services to children aim at building self-esteem and emotional resilience. I support parents in enhancing attunement to their children and cohesion in marital relationship that enables them to parent better.
I am honored to join your journey of seeking changes for yourself and relationships with your loved ones. I appreciate your courage and openness in choosing to come into therapy when circumstances may be difficult. I believe that we all have the capacity for hope, resiliency, and growth amid our most brokenness.
Education and Credentials
MS. in Marriage and Family Therapy – Seattle Pacific University (Candidate)
Master of Applied Economics – National University of Singapore
